NeilMed Sinus Rinse — Instructions for Use

What Is NeilMed Sinus Rinse?

NeilMed Sinus Rinse is a safe, gentle nasal irrigation system that uses a buffered saline solution to flush the nasal passages and sinuses. At Sleep and Sinus Centers of Georgia, we recommend nasal rinsing as one of the most effective at-home tools for managing sinus symptoms. Regular use can help relieve nasal congestion, flush out allergens and irritants, thin and clear thick mucus, and support recovery from sinus infections, colds, and nasal procedures — including Balloon Sinuplasty.

Where to Buy

NeilMed Sinus Rinse kits and replacement saline packets are available at most pharmacies and online. We recommend starting with a kit — it includes the bottle and your first set of packets. Replacement packets are sold in bulk (50–100 count) for ongoing daily use.

What You Need

  • NeilMed Sinus Rinse squeeze bottle
  • NeilMed saline packets (included with the starter kit)
  • Distilled water, or water that has been boiled and cooled to lukewarm

⚠ Important: Never use tap water directly from the faucet. Always use distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water to reduce the risk of infection.

How to Prepare the Solution

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the bottle or packets.
  2. Fill the bottle to the marked fill line with lukewarm distilled or previously boiled water.
  3. Add one saline packet to the water.
  4. Cap the bottle and gently shake or swirl until fully dissolved.

How to Perform the Rinse

  1. Stand over a sink or in the shower. Tilt your head sideways at about a 45-degree angle so one nostril is higher than the other.
  2. Insert the bottle tip gently into your upper nostril. A light seal is all that is needed — do not force it.
  3. Open your mouth slightly and breathe through your mouth throughout the rinse.
  4. Squeeze the bottle steadily. The solution will flow through the upper nostril and drain out the lower. Some may drain through the back of the throat — this is normal.
  5. Spit out any solution that enters your mouth. Do not swallow it.
  6. After using half the bottle, gently blow your nose, then switch sides and repeat.

How Often Should I Rinse?

Rinse 1–2 times daily, or as directed by your provider. Most patients find morning and evening rinses most effective. If you are recovering from a procedure or managing an active sinus infection, your provider may recommend rinsing more frequently.

Cleaning Your Bottle

  • Rinse with clean water after every use.
  • Air-dry completely with the cap off — do not leave standing water inside.
  • Wash with soap and warm water every few days.
  • Replace the bottle every 2–3 months, or sooner if it shows wear or discoloration.

Tips

  • Ear pressure during rinsing? Try adjusting your head angle or squeezing more gently.
  • Mild burning sensation? Use slightly warmer water and make sure the packet is fully dissolved.
  • Post-procedure patients: Do not begin rinsing until cleared by your provider. Follow your post-op instructions exactly as given at your visit.
