Alkalol Nasal Wash

Plain-language guidance from Dr. Dillard and the SSCGA care team — what to expect, how to prepare, and how to keep relief lasting after every procedure.

What Is Alkalol?

Alkalol is an over-the-counter nasal wash that combines natural ingredients — including eucalyptol, menthol, thymol, and camphor — to help soothe irritated nasal and sinus passages. When added to a saline nasal rinse, it can help loosen thick mucus, reduce post-nasal drip, and relieve the discomfort associated with sinusitis, allergies, colds, and upper respiratory infections.

Alkalol is non-habit-forming and does not contain steroids or antibiotics. It is safe for long-term daily use as directed by your provider.

What You Need

  • One NeilMed Sinus Rinse bottle with saline packets (available at most pharmacies)
  • One bottle of Alkalol Nasal Wash (available at most pharmacies, typically near the nasal spray section)
  • Distilled or previously boiled water (lukewarm)

How to Prepare the Solution

  1. Fill your NeilMed bottle with lukewarm distilled or previously boiled water to the fill line.
  2. Add one NeilMed saline packet and stir or shake gently to dissolve.
  3. Add 1 capful of Alkalol to the prepared saline solution. You may increase the amount of Alkalol gradually if desired or as directed by your provider.
  4. Replace the cap on the NeilMed bottle and gently invert to mix.

How to Rinse

  1. Stand over a sink and tilt your head sideways at roughly a 45-degree angle.
  2. Insert the tip of the NeilMed bottle gently into the upper nostril — do not force it.
  3. Breathe through your mouth and squeeze the bottle gently so the solution flows through the nasal passage and exits through the lower nostril (or into the back of the throat).
  4. Spit out any solution that drains into your mouth — do not swallow.
  5. Gently blow your nose after rinsing each side.
  6. Repeat on the opposite nostril.

Frequency

Irrigate 1–2 times daily, or as directed by your provider. Many patients find rinsing once in the morning and once before bed most effective.

Tips for Best Results

  • Always use distilled or previously boiled water — never tap water directly from the faucet.
  • Clean and air-dry your NeilMed bottle after every use to prevent bacterial growth.
  • If you feel pressure or fullness in your ears while rinsing, tilt your head slightly differently or reduce the squeeze pressure.
  • Some patients experience a mild menthol sensation from the Alkalol — this is normal.
