What Are Alcohol Ear Drops?
Alcohol ear drops are a simple, homemade solution your provider may recommend to help maintain dry, clean ear canals — particularly for patients who are prone to swimmer's ear (otitis externa), ear canal moisture buildup, or recurring outer ear infections. The combination of grain alcohol and white vinegar creates a mildly acidic, drying environment that discourages bacterial and fungal growth.
Ingredients
- 2/3 oz. 100% Pure Grain Alcohol (drinking alcohol — not rubbing alcohol)
- 1/3 oz. White Vinegar
How to Prepare
Mix the alcohol and vinegar together thoroughly in a small clean dropper bottle. Store at room temperature. Do NOT refrigerate — cold drops can cause temporary dizziness when placed in the ear canal.
How to Use
- Tilt your head to one side so the affected ear faces up.
- Gently pour or drop the mixture into the ear canal, filling it.
- Hold the position and let the solution sit for 3–5 minutes.
- Tilt your head the opposite direction to allow the solution to drain out onto a tissue.
- Repeat on the other ear if instructed.
Recommended Schedule
- Weeks 1–2: Use every other day
- Week 3 onward: Use once per week for maintenance
Important Precautions
- Do NOT use if you have a perforated (ruptured) eardrum or ear tubes (tympanostomy tubes) — the solution should never enter the middle ear.
- Do NOT use if you have active ear drainage, bleeding, or significant pain — contact our office first.
- If you experience burning, increased pain, or irritation, discontinue use and call our office.
- Keep out of eyes.
